Hello everybody! I guess I'm the first one to post a comment on our new blog place, so I must say that this is a great honor for me :D I remember the American Studies forum since I was a freshman and it was really fun trying to realize who is who. I hope everybody will be back and posting here too. As an introduction to everybody and especially to the newcomers in the American Studies field, all I can say is that it is great fun being part of this program, and a great experience that helps one develop in all fields of culture. For me, a future third year student, the past two years changed a whole lot of my views and opinions, and I'm looking forward for more. I'll put an end to it for the beginning, and let everybody else join and speak their mind too. Hope to see you all here!
I was "slackerflu". No, I think you were not in the country in that period, I guess that from the instructors, only Ilinca was around all the time on the forum. By the way, I wanted to ask you something, as a small paranthesis. I saw that last year's freshmen had a course in visual arts with you, which we missed because you were away when we were freshmen. Are we going to take that class in the third year or it's bye-bye forever? :(
Ooooh, I'm afraid it's not going to happen...which is too bad, because I would've loved to discuss really cool visual matters with you! The only thing you could do - but this is probably not going to happen either:( - is come and audit my classes with the 1st year whenever you like. I'm saying don't think it will happen because it's just going to be such a difficult year for you guys, what with the diploma paper and graduation exam and everything! But you're always welcome, that's for sure.
Ok, I understand... That's too bad, and I don't know if we can make it to your first year classes. Maybe we can get hold of the course-pack at least...
hello!!!! may i say that the visual arts class is the best class i ever had. it opened my eyes to so many things and made me want to know more about them that i really have to look up for a lot of books,and hopefully have time to read them :)) i feel sorry for those who could not atend the calss and offer my course-pack to anyone that wants it with the condition to have it back in the shape that it is now...very good...have a nice holiday
It's very nice to hear that. We'll keep in touch and hopefully we'll meet when the school year begins and you'll share your course pack with me, I promise to give it back safe and sound :) Thanks!
As someone who has had the (dubious) honor of officially experiencing the mysterious ways of the English department only to unofficially moonlight as an American Studies student, I can say I experienced the best of both worlds; all in all, I'd say the Am. Studies dept. has the upper-hand. Merry old England is not so merry and a little too old. Uncle Sam is fresh, dynamic and he definitely wants you:) the reasons are simple: the focus is more on the student and less on getting the lecture over with 10 minutes after it begins, and the approaches are different; one says (or at least gives that impression) "We bow to LEC and generally irrelevant information", the other "We emphasize practical knowledge and don't bore you to death teaching it".
Thanks a lot, Marsic, and hopefully you'll be our grad student and we'll tell you more about how to talk about LEC in a politically correct way (kidding, kidding, of course:)! m.
